Apple Peeling
During the 3 day festival there are many FREE contests to enter that take place for any age, male and female.
Can you peel an apple with a knife and not break the peeling? The longest & continuous peel is the winner! The longest peel recorded has been 130". Start practicing now & come show off your talent on Sat, Sept 9, 2023 starting at
1:00 PM in the gazebo.
The Apple Peeling is free & fun to enter along with fun to watch. There are entries for youth and adults. Everyone entering will need to provide your own knife & a chair to sit in if wish.
Past years winners length of the Apple Peeling:
Youth Division:
- 1st = 69 7/8 inches
- 2nd = 49 1/2 inches
- 3rd = 46 1/4 inches
Adult Division:
- 1st = 125 1/2 inches
- 2nd = 102 1/2 inches
- 3rd = 91 7/8 inches

Apple Baking Contest
Does your family have a favorite recipe for Apple pie, apple cake, apple jam or jelly?
Bring your apple based treat to be judged on Saturday, September 9, 2023. It doesn't cost anything to enter this great event. That afternoon see if your treat is now an Apple Festival winner. In past years some of our winners' baked goods have sold for over $1,000.
Contest Rules:
- You may enter 1 item in each division (Ex: 1 pie, 1 bread or cake and 1 jam or jelly if you wish for a total of 3 entries per person.
- All entries MUST be made from an variety of fresh apples. No canned or commercially prepared filling may be uses. MUST be apple based to be judged.
- Pie crust must be made from "scratch" and be a double crusted pie. NO commercially produced pie crust will be allowed.
- Recipe and variety of apples used must be furnished with each entry.
- All entries should be in disposable container or item that need not be returned. Entries will not be returned following the judging and sale. So don't bake your treat in grandma's special pie plate.
- All entries should be brought to the Seymour United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Business 60 and Main Street, just north of the square.
- All entries must be entered at the church between 9:00 to 10:30 AM and judging begins at 11:00 AM.
- The winning treats will be auctioned off Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023 at 3:15 PM. The non-winning pies are sold by silent auction. All entries are sold after judging.
- Auctioneers are all volunteers and proceeds go towards festival expenses.
- There are 6 competition categories and prizes. Apples are divided in these categories
- Apple Seedling Division - Juniors, age 16 and under.
- Apple Blossom Division - Women, ages 17 to 49 years old.
- Jonathan Division - Men ages 17 and older.
- Granny Smith Division - Women ages 50 and older.
Each pie division has 3 prizes 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places.
The pies are judged by a secret panel of judges. The pies are numbered and the judge's DO NOT know whose pie they are judging.
Each pie is judged using this point system 1-5; 5 being the best. 25 points being the highest a pie can receive.
Pies are judged for overall appearance, consistency of filling, texture of crust, texture of apples, overall taste.
Jam & Jelly Division: There are 3 prizes in this division 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. It is judged using the 1-5 point system for a possible score of 25. It is judged on overall appearance, degree of difficulty or creativity, How memorable the taste is, overall taste, texture of the jam or jelly.
Cake & Bread: There are 3 prizes in this division 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. It is judged using the 1-5 point system for a possible score of 25. It is judged on overall appearance, degree of difficulty or creativity, How memorable the taste is, overall taste, texture of the jam or jelly.
Grand Champion: Apple baking is determined by the highest point getting item from any of the 3 divisions and apple pie, jam and jelly, cake or bread. The grand champion is the item that has the highest point scored bake item.
